How the CRS score works
The Comprehensive Ranking System scores every Express Entry candidate out of 1,200 points across four sections:
A. Core human capital β up to 500
Age, education, languages, Canadian work experience. Max 500 if single, 460 if accompanied by a spouse.
B. Spouse factors β up to 40
Your spouse's education, language, and Canadian work experience.
C. Skill transferability β up to 100
Bonus combinations: education Γ language, education Γ Canadian work, foreign work Γ language, etc.
D. Additional β up to 600
Provincial nomination (600), French skills (up to 50), Canadian education (up to 30), sibling in Canada (15).
IRCC invites the highest-ranked candidates in regular draws β general draws and category-based draws (French, healthcare, STEM, trades, agriculture, education). Your target score depends on which draw type you qualify for.
Converting test scores to CLB
CRS uses Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB/NCLC) levels, not raw test scores. Quick reference for the most common test, IELTS General Training:
| CLB | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 8.5+ | 8.0+ | 7.5+ | 7.5+ |
| 9 | 8.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| 8 | 7.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 |
| 7 | 6.0β7.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 |
| 6 | 5.5 | 5.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 |
CELPIP scores map 1-to-1 with CLB (CELPIP 9 = CLB 9). For French, TEF Canada and TCF Canada convert to NCLC levels. Always verify with the official IRCC conversion tables.
What changed in 2025β2026
- Job offer points removed (March 25, 2025). Arranged employment no longer adds 50 or 200 points. A job offer may still matter for program eligibility, but not for your CRS score.
- Category-based draws expanded. French speakers, healthcare workers, STEM, trades, education, and agriculture occupations get targeted draws with lower cut-offs than general draws.
- French is the strongest bonus left. NCLC 7 in all four French abilities adds 25β50 points and qualifies you for French-category draws with significantly lower cut-offs.
Frequently asked questions
Q. What score do I need to get invited?
A. There's no fixed minimum β each draw sets its own cut-off. General draws in 2025β2026 have run above 500; category-based draws have gone as low as ~390. Check the official IRCC rounds of invitations page for the latest numbers.
Q. My spouse lowers my score. Should I apply alone?
A. Sometimes a single application scores higher, but your spouse then can't be included as an accompanying family member. Compare both scenarios with this calculator (switch the first question) β and get professional advice before deciding, as this affects your family's status.
Q. Does my foreign degree count automatically?
A. No. You need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) from a designated organization (e.g., WES) confirming your credential's Canadian equivalence.
Q. How long is my CRS score valid?
A. Your Express Entry profile stays in the pool for 12 months, but your score updates automatically β for example, it drops on your birthday if you cross an age bracket, or when your language test passes its 2-year validity.
Q. Is this calculator the same as the official IRCC tool?
A. It uses the same published points grid. The official tool at canada.ca governs in case of any discrepancy β use this one for quick planning and scenario comparison.
